Our Story: Tradition Meets Evolution
The Foundation: A Lifetime of Discipline
Martial arts is more than a hobby; it is a lifelong pursuit of excellence. My journey began in the deep traditions of Chito-Ryu Karate, where I spent over 25 years studying the nuances of discipline, form, and respect.
I am honored to have received my rank from Hanshi Shane Higashi, a 10th-Degree Black Belt and a legendary figure in Canadian martial arts. Under his guidance, I learned that the true heart of martial arts is not found in the color of a belt, but in the character of the person wearing it.
Broadening the Scope: The Gracie Connection
As my understanding grew, so did my desire for a complete defensive system. This led me to the mats of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). I currently hold a Brown Belt under Trevor Lewis, a respected representative of the Gracie Humaita Association.
Training in the Gracie lineage—the original source of modern BJJ—taught me the "Gentle Art" of leverage and the reality of ground defense. It was the final piece of the puzzle, proving that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a larger, stronger attacker through superior technique.
The Birth of Jitsu-Do: Why I Evolved
After decades of practice, I realized a difficult truth: traditional systems often carry "fluff"—techniques and rituals that are kept simply because "that’s how it’s always been done," even if they are impractical or harmful to the body.
I believe I owe a duty to my students to teach what actually works in the 21st century. I founded Jitsu-Do Karate to bridge the gap.
"Jitsu" (実) means "Practical." Jitsu-Do is the culmination of my experience in Karate, BJJ, Judo and other martial arts influences. We have stripped away the unrealistic "movie" techniques and the joint-destroying deep stances. Instead, we focus on:
Gross-Motor Movements: Techniques that work when your adrenaline is pumping.
Natural Longevity: Stances and movements that allow you to train into your 80s without destroying your knees and hips.
The Science of Not Losing: Simple, effective strategies to stay safe and healthy.
My Promise to You
Whether you are a parent looking for discipline for your child, or an adult looking to reclaim your fitness and safety, my goal is the same: To help you find the best version of yourself.
I personally work with every new adult student to ensure you feel safe, supported, and capable from your very first minute on the mats. At Jitsu-Do, you aren't just another student; you are a member of a community dedicated to health, self-betterment, and practical protection.
